MLB the Show 26 RTTS Player Development Guide for Beginners

Developing your Road to the Show (RTTS) player in MLB The Show 26 can feel like a massive grind when you are stuck in Double-A batting .220 with no power.

Build Your Ballplayer with Intention

Your player’s growth isn't just about what you do on the field; it starts with how you set up your build in the menus.

  • Commit to Your Archetype: Your archetype program is the foundation of your player's identity. Pick a playstyle that aligns with your position. If you want a power-hitting third baseman, do not choose a archetype that leans heavily into speed and fielding early on.

  • Use Perks to Plug Weaknesses: Dynamic perks offer massive stat boosts. Early in your career, use your perk slots to prop up your lowest essential stats. If your power is low, slot in power perks so you can actually hit the ball past the warning track while your base attributes catch up.

  • Let Gear Do the Heavy Lifting: Equipment provides "passive" stat boosts that do not count toward your base attribute caps. Save your Stubs and buy diamond-tier bats, batting gloves, and cleats as soon as possible. A good piece of gear can instantly give you a +10 boost to Contact or Power, making your player feel viable even at low overall ratings.

Maximize Every At-Bat and Appearance

The fastest way to grow your attributes is by performing well during games. Fortunately, you can tweak the game rules to stack the deck in your favor.

  • Play on Rookie or Veteran Early On: There is no shame in lowering the difficulty when you are a 60-overall prospect. Playing on Rookie or Veteran mode makes the pitch speed manageable and the PCI (Plate Coverage Indicator) massive. This guarantees hits, home runs, and hard contact, which translates directly to faster attribute growth.

  • Work Deep Counts: Do not swing at the first pitch every time. Working deep counts and drawing walks earns you more attribute points and keeps your player disciplined. The more pitches you see per plate appearance, the more opportunities you have to boost your vision and discipline stats.

  • Crush Dynamic Challenges: During key situations, the game will offer you a Dynamic Challenge (like "Drive in the run using power swing"). Always look at the rewards and lean toward the higher-difficulty challenges if you feel confident. The XP and program multipliers they offer are massive.

  • Skip the Fluff: If you only care about hitting or pitching, go into your RTTS settings and turn off fielding and baserunning opportunities. Simulating these non-essential appearances saves you time and lets you focus 100% of your energy on the actions that yield the most progression.

Treat Program Missions Like a Checklist

Your Archetype Program is your roadmap to unlocking better perks, equipment packs, and Stubs.

  • Check Your Missions Regularly: Don’t just play blindly. Head to the main menu between series to see what your current archetype program requires. You might need 30 hits, 10 extra-base hits, or 15 strikeouts to hit your next major milestone.

  • Lean Into Repeatable Missions: Keep an eye on repeatable missions like tallying hits or pitching innings. Because these reset continuously, grinding them out provides a steady, predictable stream of program stars.

  • Open Packs Immediately: Do not hoard your reward packs. Open them as soon as you earn them. Equipping a newly unlocked Gold perk or a better pair of cleats right away will give you an immediate edge in your next game.

Use Training Days Wisely

Every few series, the game gives you a Training Day. It is tempting to just click through these, but making the right choice here dictates your player's ultimate ceiling.

  • Prioritize Raising Your Stat Caps: Base attributes naturally cap out at certain numbers. When a training session offers to raise your maximum attribute ceiling (e.g., pushing your Max Power from 75 to 80), always prioritize it. You can earn regular attribute points on the field, but you can only raise the caps here.

  • Focus on Your Primary Stats: Keep the main thing the main thing. If you are a hitter, spend your training days on Contact and Power. If you are a pitcher, focus on Velocity and Control. Do not waste training days boosting your bunting or blocking stats early on.

  • Avoid Resting Unless Necessary: The game will frequently suggest that you spend a training day resting to restore durability or stamina. Ignore this unless your player's health meters are dangerously low. Resting doesn't improve your player; actual training does.
