You've got a rare item with two rolls your build genuinely wants, one stat that does nothing, and no easy replacement waiting in your stash. That is the moment an Orb of Annulment starts to matter in PoE 2. It sits among the more serious Path of Exile 2 Currency choices because it removes one random modifier from a Magic or Rare item. You might clear the dead weight and open a path toward a great upgrade. You might also erase the very roll that made the item special.
The orb is a wager, not a repair button
Players often see one bad suffix on an otherwise promising piece of gear and assume an annul is the obvious answer. It rarely is. The orb has no preference for your unwanted modifier, so every affix on the item is exposed. Before spending one, count how many outcomes you can live with. An item with three strong modifiers and one poor one gives you only a narrow success window. If losing any of those good rolls would force you to replace the item, it may be better to keep wearing it and continue farming.
Use it when the next crafting step has real value
The strongest annul attempts usually happen in a larger plan. Perhaps you have a desirable fractured base, added several modifiers, and now need space before trying another expensive currency step. Perhaps a weapon already has the damage rolls your build needs but carries an irrelevant defensive stat. The key question is not "Can this item become better?" Almost every rare can. Ask what you will do if the desired modifier disappears. If the answer is an Exalted Orb, a targeted follow-up, or a saleable item with cleaner affixes, the risk has a purpose.
Progression gear and endgame projects need different rules
During early and mid-progression, don't treat every decent upgrade like a crafting project. A helmet with life, resistance, and an awkward attribute roll can still carry you through plenty of content. Spending scarce currency to perfect temporary gear slows down the rest of your loadout. In endgame, the calculation changes. A high-quality base with several high-tier affixes can justify an annul because replacing those rolls may take far longer than replacing the currency. This is especially true for builds that need a tight combination of defenses, damage, and resource stats rather than a pile of merely acceptable modifiers.
Know when to stop rolling the dice
Good crafters protect their currency by setting a limit before they click. Decide which rolls are untouchable, what result counts as success, and when the item becomes a loss you simply move on from. RNG is part of PoE 2 crafting, but blind optimism drains resources fast. If you'd rather convert a promising item into value than risk it, checking poe2 trade options can support steadier progression while you save annulments for a project that truly deserves them.
