Which Bank Is Actually the Biggest Bank in Indonesia?

I looked into this properly after a friend asked me, and I realized I didn't actually know the real answer, just assumed BCA because that's the one everyone talks about.
Turns out it's Bank Mandiri. Not BCA, not BRI.

The Short Answer

Mandiri closed out 2025 with total assets over Rp2,800 trillion, which honestly is a bigger gap than I expected. So if you're going purely by assets, which is how most "biggest bank" rankings work, Bank Mandiri is the biggest bank in Indonesia, full stop.

But here's the thing nobody tells you when they just throw out that one fact. Mandiri being the biggest bank in Indonesia doesn't mean it's the best bank, or the most used, or even the most profitable per branch. It just means it holds the most assets.

Why Mandiri Is on Top

A huge chunk of why that's true comes down to Mandiri basically being the government's bank. State projects, infrastructure loans, big corporate deals - that's Mandiri's bread and butter. Its corporate lending grew 23% last year alone. Commercial lending was up 12%. Those numbers beat what BCA did in the same categories, and that's really the whole reason Mandiri sits at number one.

But It Depends What You're Asking

Ask a different question and you get a completely different winner. Strongest capital position? That's BRI, not Mandiri. Most people using it every single day for QR payments or mobile transfers? Probably BCA, not Mandiri. BCA's also the biggest private bank in the country, since Mandiri, BRI, and BNI are all state owned, which people forget.

So three questions, three different "biggest." Kind of annoying honestly if you just wanted one clean answer, but that's finance for you.

The Rest of the Top 10

Past the top three, BNI plays in a similar space to Mandiri but smaller. BTN is basically the mortgage and housing bank. BSI matters too, since it's the biggest bank in Indonesia and that segment has been growing fast the last couple of years. Then CIMB Niaga, Panin, Permata, and OCBC NISP round out most top 10 lists, none of them really trying to compete with Mandiri or BRI on scale, more just carving out their own space.

The Bottom Line

If someone asks you point blank, "what's the biggest bank in Indonesia," the correct answer is Bank Mandiri, by assets. Just don't stop there if you actually want to understand how Indonesian banking works, because BRI and BCA are dominant in ways that don't show up if you only look at one number.
