Road tripping through Peru

My wife and I are heading to Peru so she can finally see the land where her parents and ancestors grew up. Her folks moved to the States before she was born so she has never visited her roots before. I am quite excited to explore a new country myself. We are looking into getting some wheels to visit all the landmarks on our own. Does anyone know if the local shops are reliable or is it better to stick with international brands that usually have higher prices but better vehicles?
